Chakras
Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning "wheel that spins," and it refers to vortexes of energy, spinning like wheels in the body. The chakras are our spiritual organs, processing energy and vibrations, much like our physical organs process food and water. The chakras are finely-tuned, recording and responding to vast amounts of subtle energy frequencies minute by minute.
There are seven primary chakras in the physical body positioned along the spinal column, as well as many sub-chakras throughout the body. There are also chakras located outside of the physical body. Each of the seven major chakras holds a portion of our spiritual information and corresponds to an endocrine gland in the body. The endocrine system is how our spiritual information is translated into the body. It becomes the hormones and chemicals that our body responds to in creating our wellness and physical immunity.
When our chakras are aligned and balanced, they radiate life force energy and well-being. When they are misaligned and out of balance, we experience negativity, pain, and dis-ease. Our chakras are influenced by our thoughts, emotions, words, and actions, as well as the thoughts, emotions, words, and actions of those around us.
Each of our chakras has a consciousness of its own, and as we learn to communicate with these consciousnesses we have the ability to let go of the distorted vibrational patterns of dis-ease and dis-harmony and to restore harmonious vibrational patterns radiating joy, well-being, and perfect health.
Root Chakra
The root chakra, located at the tailbone, has to do with our physical vitality, our life force, and how we experience life on this planet. It grounds our physical being to the Earth's life force and gives stability. The primary purpose of our root chakra is to keep us safe. If it is not our time to go, our root chakra can override any information or energy to keep us alive and safe.
Other energies and functions of the root chakra include building up an existence, finding material security, and securing the propagation and survival of the species. The root chakra often holds our genetic and family agreements.
The consciousness of the root chakra is the most primal of the chakras. It is the consciousness that keeps us alive, generates our most primal instincts, and influences the basest of our emotions.
When our root chakra is balanced and functioning properly, we experience vitality, self-confidence, and the strength and courage to make our way in the world. As we release the safety and scarcity fears held in the root chakra, we are able to live in abundance with faith and trust in All That Is.
The energy of the root chakra affects our feet, legs, hips, vagina, ovaries, penis, prostate, colon, DNA, and our spine - the very foundation of our body. The associated endocrine glands are the ovaries and gonads.
Sacral Chakra
The sacral chakra, located a bit below the belly button, has to do with how we experience our emotions, our creativity, and our sexuality. The center of gravity resides at the sacral chakra, and in some circles the sacral chakra is considered the seat of Shakti, the female aspect of God in the form of creative energy.
The sacral chakra holds our ability to sense other people's emotions, called clairsentinence, and it holds much of our information about both our romantic relationships and our friendships. One of the ways we have learned to feel safe, or to fit in and be accepted, is to "match" at the sacral chakra level. So if someone is happy, angry, or sad, we might begin to "match" them and feel their happiness, anger, or sorrow.
The question the sacral chakra asks is "what is that feeling?" If we are grounded and confident, then we have permission to experience our own emotions and we give others permission to do the same. If, however, we have self-doubt or little confidence, then we tend to personalize others' emotions, thinking that they are about us, or we feel invalidated when others do not match our emotions.
When our sacral chakra is balanced and functioning properly, we experience self-confidence and emotional balance and stability. As we release the fear, doubt, and addictions held in the sacral chakra, we are able to live with self-assurance maintaining harmonious alignment with our Soul-self.
The energy of the sacral chakra affects our kidneys, bladder, reproductive organs, and the spleen. The associated endocrine glands are the ovaries and gonads.
Solar Plexus Chakra
The solar plexus chakra, located a bit above the belly button, has to do with our personal power and the distribution of our energy. Not only does this chakra distribute energy to regulate the needs of the body, it also draws forth energy from the universal source.
The solar plexus chakra has a lot to do with our ownership of the body or our commitment to our body. It is our power center, helping us to assert ourselves and to set boundaries and respect the boundaries of others, and it is where we find our social identity, helping us to fit in with others while at the same time maintaining our personal integrity.
Some of the most common imbalances we experience are held in the solar plexus chakra. The games of power, control, judgment, and resistance are played out at this level of consciousness when this chakra is underdeveloped. We also experience competition and advantage, and we engage in the duality concepts of good/bad and right/wrong.
When our solar plexus chakra is balanced and functioning properly, we experience self-esteem, clarity of thought, and wisdom. We are self-controlled, poised, and graceful. As we release the fear and control issues held in the solar plexus chakra, we are able to live as the masters of our own lives in harmony with All That Is.
The energy of the solar plexus chakra affects our abdomen, digestive system, liver, gallbladder, nervous system, adrenal glands, back, and rational mind. The associated endocrine glands are the pancreas and the adrenal glands.
Heart Chakra
The heart chakra, located at the chest, has to do with affinity - love of self and love of others. It is the heart chakra that holds the Spirit's attraction for the body it created and our natural attraction for ourselves.
The heart chakra is the bridge between the lower "physical" chakras and the upper "spiritual" chakras. It is a gateway which connects us to our Higher Self and All That Is. It is through the heart chakra that we are connected to the Universe, and it is here that we recognize that aspect of ourselves that is utterly and completely connected to Creator; our Divine Essence or God Spark.
When our heart chakra is balanced and functioning properly, we experience unconditional love, forgiveness, beauty, and harmony. When our heart chakra is imbalanced or shut down we function as instinctual beings, meaning that we are guided by the instinctual consciousness of the three lower chakras. As we release the fear, rejections, and barriers held in the heart chakra, we are able to develop a compassionate nature and live in unity with all things.
The energy of the heart chakra affects everything, but primarily the heart, upper back, lungs, blood and circulation, the immune system, and the arms and hands. The associated endocrine gland is the thymus gland.
Throat Chakra
The throat chakra, located at the base of the throat, has to do with our personal expression; how we put ourselves out in the world to experience our experiences. It is through this chakra that we demonstrate our creativity and creative expression and manifest our reality and deepest dreams.
Most of us know this chakra as the communication chakra and this includes all types of communication, including verbal, written, telepathic, clairaudient, and body language. The spoken word is an incredibly powerful tool on the physical plane and holds tremendous creative capacity. It is through this chakra that we communicate with our guides and the higher realms.
When our throat chakra is balanced and functioning properly, we utilize the language of love, speaking our highest truth with discernment, gentleness, and compassion. Some of the activities that cause congestion or imbalance in our throat chakra include judging or criticizing others, not owning our power by expressing our true feelings, using negative language, gossiping, and lying. As we release the fear held in the throat chakra, we become proficient in manifesting our creative vision for our reality and our future.
The energy of the throat chakra affects our respiratory system, throat, ears, teeth, mouth, jaw, larynx, lungs, vocal cords, trachea, tonsils, and neck. The associated endocrine gland is the thyroid gland.
Third Eye Chakra
The third eye chakra, located between the eyebrows in the center of the head, has to do with our clairvoyance - our ability to see our path and our truth, our ability to see Spirit, our ability to visualize and create mental pictures, and our ability to access our visionary and psychic abilities. This chakra opens the doors to our inner senses and our intuition.
The third eye chakra is our connection to the cosmos, the universe, and Spirit. It has been called the mystical eye of Shiva and it represents direct cosmic vision, intuition, and perception. It is through this chakra that we send and receive information to the higher realms.
When our third eye chakra is functioning properly, we are aware of the Divine plan and our role in that plan. When this chakra is out of balance or shut down, we are unable to see the world clearly and we are led astray by illusion and delusion. As we clear the fear and distortions held in the third eye chakra, we experience an unending flow of inspiration and creative ideas, accessing the revelation and prophecy of the cosmic dream.
The energy of the third eye chakra affects our cerebellum, lower brain, eyes, and nervous system. The associated endocrine gland is the pineal gland.
Crown Chakra
The crown chakra, located at the top of the head, has to do with our knowingness or our claircognizance. This is the ability to access our own wisdom and have our own answers.
This chakra opens the pathway to our Higher Self and offers abundant wisdom, gifts, and miracles. This chakra's energy is transpersonal - it is aligned to spiritual transformation and spiritual awakening - and it is deeply mystical.
When our crown chakra is functioning properly, we are aware of our spiritual nature as well as our physical nature. We are connected to the higher realms and have a deep connection to Creator and our divinity. When this chakra is out of balance or shut down, we lack spiritual experience, we are disconnected from the higher realms, and we lose faith in the divine. We allow our physical nature to hold dominion over all other aspects of ourselves.
The energy of the crown chakra affects the head, brain, hypothalamus, nervous system, endocrine system (glands and hormones), and spinal cord. The associated endocrine gland is the pituitary gland.
